When youāre nominated for awards as frequently as DaāVine Joy Randolph has been this year, a solid glam squad is a professional requirement. For the past two years, the Oscar-winning actress has relied on the consistency and creativity ofĀ her team: Stylist duo Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald, hairstylist Tai Simon and makeup artist Sheika Daley. Daley, who also works with Serena Williams, says Randolph āknows what she likesā but trusts her teamās creative vision. āThat trust has only deepened over time, which makes our collaboration feel seamless.āĀ
Their teamwork was on display at the 2024 Emmys ceremony on Sunday, as they prepped Randolph, nominated for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for her role as Detective Williams onĀ Only Murders in the BuildingĀ (one of the Hulu seriesā 21 nods). The group congregated at a hotel, where the vibe was chill and relaxing, per Daley. āWe listened to classic ā90s R&B, laughed, joked and created magic.ā
For this bold and controversial look, one of Randolphās key directives was that it differed from the classic,Ā old-Hollywood stylesĀ she favored throughout the film award season earlier this year (where she cleaned up for her role inĀ The Holdovers). āWe definitely wanted to switch it up,ā explains Daley. āThe Oscars was a huge moment, so for this look, we wanted to bring a different kind of energy ā still glam, but more playful and fresh.ā
Simon was up first. She and Randolph āhave several shared hair folders of reference ranging from colors, styles and different cuts. You name it ā sheās just as obsessed with hair as I am,ā says Simon, who also tends to Zendayaās tresses.Ā The brief for the Emmys hair? āShe wanted something that was a staple but still pushed the envelope.āĀ
Though her hooded Sophie Couture gown covered the hair, a wet look was visible with a rusty red hair color, courtesy ofĀ myDentityĀ by Guy Tang.
Then it was time to hand the primping reigns to Daley, who took around 90 minutes for the makeup. āI like to do makeup after hair so I can see how everythingās coming together.ā In reality, however, she began her process days before with skin prep. āWe focused on hydration and keeping the skin calm. I suggested she use LancĆ“meāsĀ Advanced GĆ©nifique SerumĀ a few days leading up to the event to boost that glow. And I always remind her to drink plenty of water.
āWeāre both on the same page about keeping the skin fresh and not overloading it with product,ā says Daley, who used LancĆ“meĀ Teint Idole Ultra Wear FoundationĀ to give ācoverage without feeling heavy. Heavy contouring isnāt her thing ā we love to enhance her natural structure rather than masking it.ā Soft matte skin isnāt the only fall ā24Ā trendĀ that Daley referenced for the look.
āWe also played with metallic eyes, but with our own spin.ā Daley used LancĆ“me Hypnose DramaĀ Eyeshadow Palette for the soft purples. And the dramatic inner-corner winged eyelinerāLancĆ“me Drama Liqui-Pencil WaterproofĀ Eyelinerāāplays off the colors and textures of the dress without overshadowing it.ā To finish the eyes as the focal point, Daley layered on LancĆ“me Lash IdoleĀ MascaraĀ and plenty of dramatic lashes.Ā
For Randolphās signature brows, which have become a viral discussion topic in their own right, Daley āenhanced whatās already thereā with LancĆ“meĀ Brow Define PencilĀ āto give them a little more definition without overdoing it, because her brows have such a great natural shape and fullness.āĀ
When it comes to staying power for award shows and after-parties, āItās all about layering and setting,ā says Daley. She used LancĆ“meĀ La Base Pro PrimerĀ before makeup application and the brandāsĀ Long Time No Shine Loose Setting PowderĀ (which Randolph also stashed in her bag along with blotting papers) andĀ Fix It Forget It Setting SprayĀ as finishing touches. āThat way, no matter how long the night goes, her makeup stays flawless.āĀ
But for hair pro Simon, itās not necessarily about everything staying where it started; her aim is that when āinevitable fallingā happens with the hair, the look āstill maintains a beautiful style.ā Adaptation ā a truly Hollywood notion.Ā
